2014 brought us the sixth generation of the 5 series which proved to be far ahead of its rivals. It has the built-in head-up display, cutting-edge infotainment systems and safety technology, which includes the iconic Angel Eye headlight system.
Our client came to us as other workshops were unsuccessful in the diagnosis and repair of the Angel Eye system in their BMW 5 Series. On the near side, the BMW Angel Eye system was faulty, and a warning light appeared on the dashboard. Faulty BMW Series 5 Angel Eye Issue Diagnosis and Repair
The headlights are a major part of the iconic 5 series styling. With a distinctive look, the Angel Eye system also serves as an advanced safety feature in the form of daytime running lights. The headlight bulb is surrounded by LEDs forming a ring which are always on, no matter the time of day.
Our client’s 5 series had a faulty Angel Eye system on the nearside which is a significant safety risk. The warning light and the MOT test failure meant that the issue needed to be fixed quickly so as to not disrupt the owner’s busy schedule. As lighting is a safety-critical system across all cars, our technician needed to treat this issue as a high priority.
Our technician began diagnosis by referring to the specific wiring diagram of the customer’s 5 Series. We have access to the BMW repair manuals and technical bulletins to understand fault codes and perform live data checks. BMW Lighting System Diagnosis and Repair
Our technician tapped into their advanced knowledge and experience to diagnose the issue by referring to the wiring diagrams.
With a live data check and code reading, our technician surfaced a fault with the headlight driver module. Before starting work, our technician performed a visual check on the wiring around the module to see if there was any evidence of damage.
Our technician discovered that the Angel Eye system was not getting any power. Unfortunately, water had entered the headlight module, causing it to fail. Even though the headlight module was not visibly damaged and fully connected, it still wasn’t working.
The front bumper was removed to access the headlights. From here, the technician removed the faulty headlight and inspected it further. The driver module for the headlight was subject to water ingress and caused the nearside headlight to stop working. The system was tested once more to confirm the issue, and the technician confirmed that the water ingress had caused the fault.
Thanks to our expertise and fault finding, our technician was able to quickly diagnose the faulty Angel Eye in our customer’s BMW 5 series. We began the repair process by removing the faulty headlight module and replacing it with a functioning unit. It was important we then sealed the headlight to ensure that no water could enter the unit again which would lead to failure. The issue was resolved partly due to Roade Main Garage’s access to dealership-level technical information. Once we fixed the headlight module we cleared the warning light on the dashboard and the Angel Eye system was back up and running.
Fixing the Issue With BMW Angel Eye
Once we identified the headlight module water ingress which caused the faulty Angel Eye, we soon began fixing it. Water ingress in cars is a major issue and our technician investigated why this happened in our customer’s 5 Series. To make sure that this did not happen again, our technician repaired and fully sealed the unit.
The driver headlight module was repaired to ensure that power was being delivered to the Angel Eye system. Thanks to our team of specialists on hand, we were able to fix and seal the headlight unit and make sure the Angel Eye system was fully functioning.Â
