  • Land Rover P246B fault code — P246B-00, indicating that the conditions needed for DPF regeneration were not being met on a consistent basis, or that regeneration had been repeatedly interrupted.

Both codes pointed toward DPF issues, but the fault codes alone only painted a partial picture. To understand what had caused the DPF warning and the stored codes, and to make sure the correct repair was carried out, a deeper inspection was needed.

From there, our technicians began a systematic investigation to trace the fault back to its origin.


How Was the Land Rover DPF Fault Traced to Its Root Cause?

The diagnostic scan had confirmed that the DPF was carrying excessive soot and that regeneration cycles were failing. But before the right repair could be carried out, our technicians needed to determine what had caused the filter to reach that state. A Land Rover DPF fault can arise for a range of reasons, and selecting the correct repair depends on understanding exactly what’s driving the problem. Each possible cause was examined in order, with one factor ruled out before the next was considered.

Step 1: External DPF Inspection

During a regeneration attempt, the engine management system introduces additional fuel through late post-injection to raise exhaust gas temperatures. If regeneration doesn’t run to completion, some of that fuel can wash past the piston rings into the sump rather than being burnt off in the exhaust.

  • Diluted oil degrades over time and can affect overall engine condition, while the repeated failure to regenerate meant soot continued to accumulate in the DPF with no way for it to be cleared.

Step 3: Air Filter Condition Check

The air filter was checked next. A restricted air filter reduces the volume of air reaching the engine, which can lower combustion efficiency and increase particulate production. This increases the volume of particulates produced and places a greater load on the DPF over time.

  • No concerns were found with the air filter, and it was discounted as a factor.

Step 4: DPF Pressure Readings

Our technicians took differential pressure readings across the DPF using dealer-level diagnostic equipment.

  • The readings were high, confirming the filter was holding a considerable soot load.
  • This was consistent with the Land Rover P2463 fault code recorded during the initial scan.

Step 5: Boost Leak Assessment

Finally, the intake and boost system was assessed for leaks. A boost leak reduces combustion efficiency and can accelerate the rate at which soot loads the DPF.

  • No boost leaks were identified.

With every area now investigated, the root cause was confirmed. The DPF had been unable to regenerate, allowing soot to accumulate steadily in the filter. The oil dilution found during the inspection was entirely consistent with repeated failed regeneration attempts. That gradual build-up had eventually reached the point where the dashboard warning lights were triggered, the vehicle entered limp mode, and power was significantly reduced.

Testing ruled out any sensor or hardware fault as a reason for regeneration not completing, pointing to driving conditions and interrupted regeneration cycles as the most probable cause.


Resolving the Land Rover DPF Fault Through a Targeted Repair

Once the root cause had been pinpointed, our technicians spoke with Mr J to explain everything they’d found and lay out the proposed repair. With his agreement in place, the work started.

Engine oil and filter change

The engine oil had become diluted with fuel as a consequence of repeated failed regeneration attempts and was no longer providing adequate engine protection.

Forced DPF regeneration and system reset

With the filter cleaned, a service regeneration was initiated using the manufacturer-level software.

  • Following the regeneration, relevant DPF adaptation and soot loading values were reset in accordance with manufacturer procedures, ensuring the engine management system could accurately monitor the filter following cleaning and regeneration.
  • The fault memory was cleared and the system retested. No new fault codes returned.

Customer guidance

On the Ingenium diesel engine, frequent short journeys can prevent DPF regeneration from completing. When regeneration is interrupted, fuel introduced through late post-injection, intended to raise exhaust temperatures for regeneration, can wash past the piston rings. Over time, this leads to oil dilution.
