Mercedes A Service vs B Service
Keeping your Mercedes running at its best means maintaining it with the right service plan. In 2009, Mercedes introduced a maintenance schedule that lets Mercedes owners know what service their vehicle needs and how they are performed. For convenience, Mercedes has labelled different maintenance services ‘A’ and ‘B’ according to their importance.
Furthermore, your Mercedes vehicle will alert you when a service is due and what type of service is required.
In this blog post, we’ll explain the difference between the Mercedes A vs B Service and how Roade Main Garage can handle all of your Mercedes services needs. We’ll even get you better value than any main Mercedes dealer. What’s not to like?
The Mercedes-Benz A ServiceÂ
After the first year of ownership (or 10,000 miles), the Mercedes A Service is a smaller but important service for maintaining your Mercedes. After your first Mercedes A Service, your vehicle must have the service every two years after that.Â
There are several inspections, checks and adjustments that are included in the Mercedes A Service, including:
- A synthetic motor oil replacement that ensures that the engine components of your Mercedes are properly lubricated and cooled.
- The oil filter is replaced to help prevent harmful particles from entering and damaging the engine.
- Tyre inflation is checked and corrected to ensure optimum fuel efficiency, prevent uneven wear on the tyres and uphold vehicle safety.
- An inspection of the brake components is performed to ensure that they are working properly.
- When the Mercedes dashboard warning message appears, your service garage needs to reset it and update the service records on the Mercedes system or logbook.
The Mercedes-Benz B ServiceÂ
The B Service occurs roughly one year after the A Service and at two-year (or 20,000-mile) increments afterwards. The inspection and part replacement are more in-depth.Â
When your Mercedes is due for its B Service, a message will display on the dashboard informing you when it’s due.
In the Mercedes B Service, the following services are provided:
- A synthetic motor oil replacement that ensures that the engine components of your Mercedes are properly lubricated and cooled.
- The oil filter is replaced to help prevent harmful particles from entering and damaging the engine.
- In order to prevent the entry of outside pollen and dust into the cabin, the cabin dust/combination filter is replaced.
- Tyre inflation is checked and corrected to ensure optimum fuel efficiency, prevent uneven wear on the tyres and uphold vehicle safety.
- An inspection of the brake components is performed to ensure that they are working properly.
- When the Mercedes dashboard warning message appears, your garage needs to reset it and update the service records on the Mercedes system or logbook.
Mercedes Service Levels A and B for Older Models
There are some older Mercedes models that come with more specific A and B Services. Drivers may be notified about these services. A warning message such as A7 Service or B4 Service may appear on the dashboard.Â
These services require the normal A or B Service but with extra servicing of certain components. Here is a breakdown of what they mean:
- A Service – Minor basic service
- A0 or B0 Service – Major basic service
- A1 or B1 Service – Oil and filter change
- A2 or B2 Service – Brake fluid change (24 months)
- A3 or B3 Service – Pollen filter (part of B service)
- A4 or B4 Service – Air filter replacement (48 months)
- A5 or B5 Service – Grease Pan Roof (36 months)
- A6 or B6 Service – Fuel filter
- A7 or B7 Service – Spark plugs (48 months)
- A8 or B8 Service – Coolant
- A9 or B9 Service – Towbar
- AC Service – DPF
- AF Service – Auto gearbox fluid and filter (36 months)
- AH Service – Cambelt and water pumpÂ
Signs That Your Mercedes Needs to Be Serviced
Whenever your next service is due, a message will appear on your dashboard. If you do not see this message, you can find it in your vehicle settings.Â
On the Mercedes dashboard screen, find the service menu. Here you will find the ASSYST PLUS feature. Your dashboard will display a message letting you know which service you need and the number of days until your next service is due.

Servicing Case Study for Mercedes C Class
We recently performed a routine B Service on a Mercedes C Class for a customer. While the Mercedes service was being performed, we provided our client with a free courtesy car.Â
Our technician checks the following as part of this service:
- The windows, wipers, lights and mirrors.
- The hazard lights, air conditioning, horn and seat belts.
- The suspension, steering and drive system.
- The brake fluid, discs and pads.
- We look under the bonnet for any signs of leaks or faults. If required, we replace the spark plugs, belts, air filter, oil filter, etc, with genuine replacement parts.
- Underneath the vehicle. If required, we remove the trays, drain the oil and inspect the transmission for leaks, rust or corrosion.
- Tyre pressure, tread and wheel alignment are measured.
- If required, the Antifreeze level is topped up
- Refill the engine oil and update the service history.
On the Mercedes C Class, our Mercedes service specialist discovered uneven brake wear. There was an urgent need to replace the pads and discs and perform a wheel alignment on the Mercedes C Class. Fortunately, we caught it in time before it caused a serious accident.
In consultation with the customer, our technician expertly replaced the brake pads and discs, ensuring the Mercedes once again had even brake pressure and the wheels aligned as they should. In addition, our technician ensured that no suspension components were damaged during the inspection.
Furthermore, our technician inflated the tyres to the recommended level, replaced the oil and filter and reset the maintenance counter. Our technician also updated the Mercedes service record.Â
For every service or repair we perform, we follow manufacturer guidelines and specifications. In addition, we treat each and every customer and task with the same level of professionalism and efficiency. We only ever use OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or high-quality parts within our servicing.
Our client drove away confident that their Mercedes was safe for the road, had been thoroughly and correctly serviced, and had saved money compared to going to the main Mercedes dealer.
